Windjana Gorge is right nearby Tunnel Creek, 180 km from Derby and 115 km from Fitzroy Crossing, both about a 2 hour drive off the Leopold downs Road. Again, tours are available to the area as well.
Facilities in Windjama Gorge are better than neighboring Tunnel Creek. There are barbecue facilities, car parks, coach parking, picnic areas, public telephones, public toilets, an interpretive center, and a campground. The campground is very big and maintained well, with great facilities, even showers! The campground also has a separate for those with noisy generators on their caravans. Rangers will collect nominal fees each evening.
Windjana Gorge National Park is well known and highly visited because it is so easily accessible. The Windjana Gorge is 3.5 km long and was carved out of the Napier Range by the Lennard River. In the Devonian period, the entire area was under the ocean, and the Napier Range is part of the same barrier reef that you can see at Geikie Gorge and Tunnel Creek. The gorge is over 100 m wide, and the walls range from 30 to 100 m high. It’s a very impressive sight that you can only see in the dry season. Curious to this area are the freshwater crocodiles- dozens of them in each freshwater pool you come across. They are typically harmless, and seem used to people- but don’t try and get too close to them.
