The MacDonnell Ranges to the west of Alice Springs contain the West MacDonnell National Park . If you wish to see an ancient landscape which has been shaped by nature over a vast period of time, this park has everything. Strangely amidst the ancient aspects of this region there is a modern bicycle track and you can pedal from the Alice to the park.
Within the park you can cycle, walk, swim and camp. Many parts of the park have camping sites with facilities. Ochre has always been important to the indigenous Australians and the park has some fine examples of ochre outcrops. It's family friendly with even access for caravans.
There are ranger guided talks both by day and night and Australia under the stars is something to remember. Parrots, butcherbirds, rosellas and finches are just some of the many exotic and colourful birds found throughout the park.
