Werrikimbe & Willi Willi National Parks

Australia hotels

These two adjacent parks cover 63,000 hectares and are located 90 kilometres from Walcha and 80 Kilometres from Wauchope, on the Great Dividing Range's eastern escarpment. The area is known for its wild beauty and biodiversity, boasting lush rainforests, rushing rivers and magnificent scenery. It provides a habitat for more than 20 threatened species, including the rufous scrub bird. Werrikimbe contains an Aboriginal stone arrangement of ‘bora' rings, where initiation ceremonies were held and Willi Willi is home to Kemps Pinnacle, an important Aboriginal site. There are a number of walking, cycling and horse riding trails in the parks and the solitude offered by the area will particularly appeal to keen bushwalkers.

Due to the size and remoteness of the area, it's worth spending a few days there. Basic camping facilities are provided at Mooraback and Brushy Mountain and there are several picturesque picnic areas.

All access roads to the parks are gravel, steep in places, and there are some tight bends to negotiate, making it unsuitable for caravans. From the Pacific Highway to the east, the Hastings Forest Way is the usual route, and is suitable for conventional 2WD vehicles.
