Walls of Jerusalem National Park

Australia hotels

The Walls of Jerusalem National Park is only accessible on foot, and bushwalkers need to walk into the park from the car park off Mersey Forest Road. You can reach the car park by following the Mersey Forest Rd. to Lake Rowallan, and then turning left on the gravel just past the Fish River. Walking into the park through the forest takes about half an hour, and it’s another two hours to Herods Gate.

There are no facilities for casual visitors in the park, as it very remote and remains wilderness. Bushwalkers must be well-equipped and experienced in order to spend overnights in the park. Camping is permitted in the park, but bushwalkers must carry their tents. Huts in the park are in poor condition and suitable only for emergency shelter. A camping platform and composting toilet are available at Wild Dog Creek, and it is recommended that walkers camp there instead of Dixons Kingdom. Open fires are not allowed, and the park is Fuel Stove Only Area.

The park forms part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Like all natural areas, practicing “Leave no Trace" guidelines is imperative. The region is an alpine wilderness, and it’s dominated by dolerite peaks, lakes, alpine vegetation, and highland tarns. Experienced bushwalkers and cross-country skiers can pursue their passions in this spectacular mountainous region that has barely been touched by the modern world, and also test their skills against the elements.
