Tunnel Creek National Park is a 91 hectare park in the Napier Range. It is made of limestone and an ancient reef system from the Devonian period. Tunnel Creek is just 30 km south east of Windjana Gorge, and you can reach it from Derby, 180 km away, or Fitzroy Crossing, that is just 115 km, via a dirt road, the Leopold Downs Road, which connects the Great Northern Highway to the Gibb River Road. There are regular tours to the park as well.
As Tunnel Creek is small, and mostly a day use park, the facilities are severely limited. There is a small parking area, a bush toilet, and an information shelter, and little else. Nearby, Windjana Gorge does have camping facilities.
People go to Tunnel Creek mostly for the 750 meter tunnel that’s been worn through the Napier Range by, you guessed it, the creek!
It is the oldest cave in Western Australia. There is just a short path to the mouth of the cave. The walls rise straight above you, and the only way to get in to the cave is to climb up and over the huge boulders at the entrance. The opening is like a huge hall, and then the tunnel starts, and it is very spacious, with a number of permanent pools that will require you to wade through-sometimes pretty deep and sometimes really chilly as well. Be sure to take a good torch or headlamp so that you can see the little waterfalls and huge stalactites inside.
