Royal National Park is the second oldest national park in the world, after Yellowstone in the USA. Located at just 32 kilometres from Sydney, this relatively small park offers the visitor a diverse landscape, providing clifftop walks, rainforest cycle tracks, surf beaches, coastal fishing, freshwater swimming holes and riverside picnic areas.
The park is rich in history and culture and there are a number of guided tours available, including one across Jibbon Headland, which is home to a number of Aboriginal sites and rock engravings. Or for those who don't mind getting wet, there's even a tour down the creek to Audley - on airbeds!
There are kiosks and picnic areas at Audley, Garie Beach and Wattamolla Beach, and three camping grounds to choose from.
If driving to from Sydney, the main entry points are all along the Princes Highway. It's also possible to reach the park by train via the Illawarra Line to Loftus, Engadine, Heathcote, Waterfall or Otford, where walking trails then lead you to the park. A tram is available from Loftus on Sundays and public holidays.
