Great Barrier Reef threats

Tourism is the major feature around the Reef. It is in the interests of the tour operators to protect the Reef; they earn their livelihood from this magnificent living structure. Fishing is strictly controlled with restrictions so as to protect the fish and marine creatures. There is a fine balance between humans enjoying the environment and the Reef surviving but because of its vast size, tourism appears to have little impact on the area.

Development can be a problem with runoff water into rivers which flow into the ocean and farmers and builders need to be careful. The Reef has survived for thousands if not millions of years and long may it continue to do so.

Climate change is discussed at length today and scientists believe a rise in the water temperature is likely to cause widespread damage to the living coral.

The Great Barrier Reef is a living treasure. As a holiday destination it offers so much for every type of tourist. Its location makes it an all-year round destination and as the slogan says, it’s perfect one day and beautiful the next. Go and enjoy Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
