If you want to visit an area where humans have lived for some 40, 000 years, the Willandra Lakes is a world heritage area and part of the Mungo National Park. It's not quite as close to Sydney as Lane Cove.

In fact it's closer to Broken Hill or even Mildura in north-west Victoria. Ancient burial sites and the 30+ kilometres of erosion known as the Great Walls of China is for those who enjoy ancient land development due to Mother Nature.

This is Mallee vegetation country. No rainforest here and the summer temperatures can be as high as 50C. Post colonial housing including woolsheds, homesteads and huts can be seen along with many native animals. Camping facilities are available and you can walk, cycle and drive within the park.
