Mt Field National Park

Australia hotels

You can drive to Mt Field National Park is just over an hour from Hobart. Take Brooker Highway A10 NW and follow the road A10 alongside the Derwent River until you get to Westerway. Then it’s just a quick drive along a winding road to the clearly marked entrance to Mt Field National Park.

Facilities at the park include camping and caravan facilities, a visitor center with a café, shop, and interpretive center of the park. In the camping areas, there are 14 powered sites, a shower and toilet block with coin-operated washers and driers, as well as a communal cooking shelter with hot water and free electric barbecues.

Small huts near Lake Dobson are also rented as basic lodging for small groups of visitors. Each can accommodate six people, with a communal toilet facility, woodshed, and water tank. There are also bunks, wood heaters, sinks, tables and chairs. The Lake Dobson picnic shelter has both indoor and outdoor tables, along with public toilets. The lower end of the park has a range of picnic facilities, with cooking shelters and electric barbecues.

The park is known for its downhill skiing areas, with three tows available on Mt. Mawson and Rodway Range. Ski and snow reports, as well as road conditions can be checked with the Southern Tasmania Ski Association website. There are also a wide range of day walks around Lake Dobson in the lower section of the park, and they range from easy strolls to cross-country ski trips across higher plateaus.
