Mount Kaputar National Park was formed by remnants of a 17 million year old volcano, resulting in a dramatic landscape which is particularly popular with rock climbers. At the peak of the range is Mount Kaputar, with an altitude of 1510m. Climbers will be rewarded with fine, panoramic views of NSW from the summit; or for those who don't want to tackle the steep walk, there are superb vistas from many other lookouts in the park.

The park protects a wide variety of plant communities and looks particularly appealing in spring when the wildflowers blossom. It also provides a habitat to a variety of wildlife, including threatened species. You may spot quolls, bats and wallabies, and if you're there after rainfall, you may come across some fascinating large pink slugs.

There is one camping ground, Bark Hut, located about 6km before the Mount Kaputar summit on the main access road. The nearest town is Narrabri, an hour away.
