Lake Torrens is in a remote outback location, 345km north of Adelaide. The dry salt lake is 250 km long. It has only filled up with water once in the last 150 years, although heavy rainfall will occasionally provide enough water to attract a wide variety of birdlife. Activities on offer include walking, photography, birdwatching and geology, as there is plenty of fossilized rock to be seen. The best time of year to visit is between March and November. Summer can be stifling, with temperatures regularly hitting 40 degrees. The area is a true wilderness: the track to the lake is for 4WD only and there are no facilities.
Bushcamping is possible in several areas of the park (permit required), or there are a range of accommodation options in the nearby towns of Woomera, Andamooka or Roxby Downs.
Access to the lake is by one of two tracks, both of which require permission from either Mulgaria or Andamooka stations, as they are not public routes.
