Lake Eyre in the Lake Eyre National Park is no ordinary lake. It's nearly always dry but when it does fill, it fills sometimes to a depth of 10 metres and the resultant wildlife is amazing. Water birds come from hemispheres away. The park is about as remote a spot as you can find not just in Australia but in the world.

You'll need special permits to visit some parts of the park. The dry lake surface has attracted daredevils who raced cars at fantastic speeds. You won't be doing that. Your 4WD will need to be in sound condition as breakdowns in this area are potentially fatal for travellers. If the lake floods, a flight in a light aircraft gives spectacular views. Camping is permitted but careful planning is essential.
