John Forrest National Park is located about 26 km from Perth, and 7 km from both Midland and Mundaring. There are two entrances off Great Eastern Highway, and a third off Park Road to Scenic Drive, and there is even public transport available, though there is a 1 or 2 km walk to park amenities.
Facilities in the park are very good. There are tearooms and the John Forrest Wildflower Tavern which are open for lunch daily. The tavern and its restaurant are also open from 1800 till very late on weekend nights, including Sunday. There are full picnic facilities including free barbecue grills in the main area of the park, and at the Rock Pool. The park has excellent bush walking, a mountain biking trail, great scenery, and the waters of Jane Brook cascade down small rapids into the Rock Pool, which is ideal for swimming. Camping facilities are limited to backpacking only.
Walks in this park might take you through rugged wilderness, or through an abandoned railway tunnel until you reach a quiet pool or perfect waterfall. You can also look out over the city of Perth from the granite outcroppings for amazing views. Wildlife is everywhere in this park, and people often see kangaroos with joeys in their pouch while dining at the tavern. There are also many native birds, possums, and bandicoots. Spring wildflowers blaze with color.
