The Jardine River National Park

Australia hotels

The Jardine River is located in the far and remote north of the Cape York Peninsula. The scenery is captivating, and diverse: broad sandstone ridges, rainforest, heathland, woodland, swamps and huge coastal sand dunes are just some of the features that visitors will marvel at. The area also has a rich Aboriginal heritage.

Bush camping is possible along the northern and southern banks of the Jardine River (no facilities and permits required) and at Eliot Falls and Captain Billy Landing. Eliot Falls campground has a range of facilities, including fireplaces, tables, drinking water and toilets. Other accommodation is available in Bamaga and Seisia, 80km north from Eliot Falls.

To get to Jardine River from Cairns, take the Peninsula Developmental Road, the main road to Cape York Peninsula. Continue on this road for 50km north from Coen then turn onto the corrugated Telegraph Road. Turn east on the Southern Bypass road, which is 40km north of the Wenlock River crossing.

All roads to and within the park and its reserves are suited only to 4WD, and visitors will need to plan ahead carefully and be completely self-sufficient. It is essential to bring plenty of fuel, basic spare parts, food, water and first aid equipment.
