Innamincka Regional Reserve

Australia hotels

Innamincka Regional Reserve is located in the outback, at the end of the Strzlecki Track, and covers 1.3 million hectares of land. The scenery comprises a series of waterways, set against a stark and arid backdrop. Cooper Creek is the jewel in the reserve's crown and the perfect spot for swimming, kayaking, boating and fishing. The region also has a remarkable cultural history, as the traditional home for several Aboriginal groups and the scene for an epic chapter in Burke and Wills' (famous explorers) ill-fated final expedition from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The area is important for industry and the ‘regional reserve' classification permits grazing, petroleum exploration and extraction to continue alongside managed recreation use, making it the first reserve of its type.

There are various picturesque riverside and creekside camping grounds to choose from (permits required), or there is a managed camp site on the Innamincka Town Common.

The neighbouring Innamincka township is the main focus for visitor activities and amenities
