Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park is about 2 ½ to 3 hour drive from Hobart or Launceston via Tasman Hwy A3, on the Freycinet Peninsula along Tasmania’s mild east coast.  Turn on Coles Bay Road C302 about 12 km south of Bicheno.  Friendly Beaches are reached by gravel road about 2 km after leaving the A3, and the main park entrance is 28 km further. Be especially careful driving during dusk and dawn, as wildlife is very active on the roads.  There is also a small airstrip near Friendly Beaches road, and Tasair, Par Avion, and Freycinet Air offer commuter and scenic flights.

Facilities in the park include electric barbecues, water, and public toilets at Honeymoon Bay and Ranger Creek. Around Coles Bay, there are campgrounds available from tent to caravan on both powered and unpowered basis, but be sure to book ahead for summer and during Easter.  At Friendly Beaches, camping is available also. There are toilets, but no water in this area.  A number of remote campsites available throughout the park, but do carry water with you.

Knuckles of granite mountains are surrounded by white sand beaches and azure bays in the park, and the jutting peaks of the Hazards are your welcome at the park entrance.  Freycinet is really two eroded granite blocks joined by a sand isthmus. Bird watching in the park is great, and many rare birds are seen. There is a wide variety of activities to keep you happily amused in the park for days. There are lots of different walks available, but the one to the pass overlooking Wineglass Bay is stunning. There is also a three day walk that covers the entire peninsula, and some more leisurely activities like swimming, beach strolls, and spotting wildlife.
