If you fancy getting off the beaten track the Diamantina National Park fits the bill. It's remote and when they talk about the nearest fuel supply being so many kilometres away, you know this is the outback of Australia.
The park has a long history of aboriginal occupation and it's a former grazing property. 4WD access is the go and some roads are impassable in the wet season. You can explore on foot or by vehicle; you can camp, canoe, fish and bird watch. There are old buildings and cemeteries.
You gain access after travelling through working properties so know the rules about gates. The bird and animal life, the trees and flowers, the mountains and the plains offer a challenge and a great reward for photographers.
