Darwin

As the capital city of the Northern Territory in Australia, Darwin, whilst being the least populated of the capital cities, is one of the most modern and multicultural ones. In Christmas 1974, seventy percent of the city was destroyed and, as a result, the city was almost entirely rebuilt making it easy to navigate, contemporary and full of plenty of places to be entertained or amused. Exploring Darwin is easy; tour buses are plentiful and, for the more active visitor, there are designated cycle lanes that go through the city and harbour. In 2004, the Adelaide-Darwin Railway was also completed, providing 2,979km of railway across Australia, with access to the centre of Darwin . There is plenty of accommodation available in Darwin , and many different restaurants, bistros and cafés where you can eat out and sample local dishes such as barramundi, buffalo and crocodile at reasonable prices.

Darwin provides the perfect resting stop before adventuring through the Australian Outback, Uluru (Ayers Rock) or across the stunning landscapes of the Kimberley Ranges. The climate, unlike many southern parts of Australia , is a tropical with no winter or summer but a wet season from November until April and a dry one from May until October.

Despite the rebuilding of the city, Darwin remains able to mix old with new and the Chinese Temple and Old Ruins are well worth a visit, bringing history and the present together.

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territories. Darwin is the base for Kakadu and the surrounding outback. Although not close many visitors travel south from Darwin to Alice Springs and onward to Uluru in the centre of Australia. Dearwin is a laid back casual place with good entertainment, restaurants and a number of attractions .

The team at Eguide have created a full Eguide for Darwin which provides lots of very useful Darwin tourism information. Download the Darwin travel guide for Darwin tourist information.
