Coongie Lakes National Park

Australia hotels

Coongie Lakes National Park is a World Heritage listed area and one of the most impressive of South Australia's many natural attractions; a collection of pristine lakes water holes, flood plains and swamps, which are home to a range of wildlife including frogs, reptiles and migratory birds. The area is a magnet for birdwatchers, who will delight in spotting a variety of birds from around the world, including kites, moorhens, pelicans, egrets, swans, spoonbills and pelicans, to name but a few.

The area is of deep cultural significance for the local Aboriginal people who once inhabited the area and it also has a strong association with European history.

The main camping site is at Scrubby Camp Waterhole, a secluded area offering visitors a very pleasant bush camping experience. There are numerous other camping grounds along the lake shores and at Cooper Creek.

Most people begin their visit to the park at the nearby township of Innamincka, where there is an information centre covering both Innamincka Regional Reserve and Coongie Lakes National Parks.
