Bundjalung National Park & Iluka Nature Reserve

Australia hotels

Bundjalung is part of the largest stretch of protected coastline in New South Wales and is located 550 km north east of Sydney, between Iluka town and Evans Head. The Bundjalung Aboriginal nation were the original occupiers of the land, thus giving the park its name. The scenery includes sandy beaches, rocky headlands, heathland and mangroves and the land supports the endangered coastal emu. Iluka Nature Reserve comprises what is left of a once vast coastal rainforest, and is home to a fascinating range of birdlife, including the White-Eared Monarch.

The Esk River and Jerusalem Creek are perfect for exploring by canoe or kayak and boating enthusiasts can make use of a public ramp at the well-serviced Woody Head Camping Area. Fishing is permitted along the coastline and in the rivers and estuaries. Whales can be spotted in season (April to June) and the best spot to view them is the lookout at Iluka Bluff. There are a number of easy-graded walking trails to enjoy as well. The beaches are suited to swimming, surfing and kayaking.

In addition to Woody Head, there is a more basic camping ground at Black Rock, adjacent to the 10-mile beach, and there are a number of picnic areas. The park is located approximately 20km off the Pacific Highway, via the Iluka Road.
