Brampton Islands National Park comprises both Brampton and Carlisle Islands, which are located at the southern passage of the Whitsunday islands. Both are surrounded by pristine coral reefs, offering an amazing array of marine wildlife. The islands and surrounding waters are part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and are protected. The islands are also important breeding grounds for turtles.
The National Park boasts secluded beaches, rocky headlands and pockets of forest. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting orange-footed scrubfowl, white-bellied sea-eagles and ospreys. Other activities include swimming, snorkelling, diving, sailing and walking.
Camping is permitted on both islands (booking essential). Picnic tables, gas barbecues, shelters and toilets are provided.
Brampton Island is located 32km north of Mackay. Access is by private boat, charter aircraft or via a commercial service operated by Brampton Island Resort.
