Barron Gorge National Park

Australia hotels

Barron Gorge National Park is located in northern Queensland, 27km north west of Cairns and offers World Heritage-listed rainforest and dramatic scenery. The area has a historical and cultural significance; there are trails which the local Aboriginal people developed, which later became the first pack routes used by Europeans to provide a link between inland gold fields and the coast. Today, you can walk the very same trails to admire the park's incredible natural features. You can walk to a lookout to view Barron Falls (particularly worth a visit after good rainfall). There is also a cable car for views over the forest canopy and out to the coast. White water rafting tours are also available.

Barron Gorge National Park does not permit camping. There is however a campsite adjacent to the park's western boundary, in the Speewah Conservation Park. Alternatively, plenty of holiday accommodation is available in Cairns or nearby Kuranda.

The park is most commonly accessed via the village of Kuranda on the Atherton Tableland. From Cairns, travel northbound on the Captain Cook Highway, take the Kennedy Highway to reach the turn-off to Kuranda and the park is well signposted from there. It is also possible to take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to Kuranda, from Smithfield. A 3km stroll from the Skyrail terminal will take you to the park entrance.
