Richmond is old, as more than 50 of its buildings are dated back to the early 1800's. A trip to Richmond is like stepping back in time and it is only a 30km trip from Hobart. The must see of your visit is the Richmond Bridge, which was built by the convicts in 1823. A highlight of the trip to Richmond are the lovely old fashioned tearooms, craft shops, galleries and antique stores to browse through.
Cambridge
Located between Hobart and Richmond, Cambridge is a delight for foodies and wine lovers. Meadowbank Estate and Frogmore Creek are a couple of wineries you can pop into for a tasting and cellar sales. Barilla Bay is an oyster farm and runs tours on weekends.
Old Hobart Town
This is a scaled down replica of the Hobart of the 1800's, it was painstakingly built from the original plans of the states capital. Bridge Street (03 6262 2502).
Richmond Gaol
This gaol housed the convicts that built the bridge as well as many other local construction projects in Richmond. Here you can find out the history of the convicts and the impact they had on Richmond's history. One of the prisoners was Ikey Solomon and reputed to be the character Dickenss\ is said to have based Fagin in Oliver Twist on. 37 Bathurst Street, Richmond (03 6260 2127).
Richmond Maze and Tea Rooms
A good place to go for a walk and maybe get lost in the maze, and then afterwards enjoy a devonshire tea in the tearooms. 13 Bridge Street, Richmond (03 6260 2451)
Sorell
This small agricultural town near Richmond has many pick your own produce farms. Sorell Fruit Farm has a great range of fruit sales and tastings. 174 Pawleena Road, Sorell (03 6265 2744)
St John's Church
This church built in 1834, boasts a history of being the oldest Catholic church in Australia.
