There are many venues around Hobart that cater to theatrical performances. Most of these are located close to the city centre of Hobart.

The Theatre Royal is located at 29 Campbell Street, Hobart. Its construction was completed in 1837 and since then the theatre has been constantly upgraded and restored. Australia’s oldest working theatre, the Theatre Royal hosts many famous plays. Ronnie Corbett, Peter Ustinov, Marcel Marceau and Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell have performed there. The works of the Tasmanian Theatre Company are performed at the Theatre Royal Backspace which is located behind the Theatre Royal.

Three days a week, the Theatre Royal is open for tours. The theatre's seating plan includes the Stalls, Dress Circle and Gallery. Some of the events on the 2011 calendar include the Australian Ballet's Don Quixote, Circus Oz, BEN 10 LIVE: Time Machine and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow.

The Playhouse Theatre at 106 Bathurst Street, Hobart was originally constructed in 1864, in 1937 it became the venue for theatrical productions. Tickets for events can be purchased over the internet, by phone or at the box office on the night of the show. Some of the shows for season 2011 include Richard III and The Seagull.

At 77 Salamanca Place is the Peacock Theatre, among many events held there is the Terrapin Puppet Theatre.
